DIABECELL® a life-changing therapy for Type 1 diabetes

Living Cell Technologies Limited is a global pioneer in the development of a revolutionary new treatment for diabetes.
DIABECELL® is LCT’s treatment designed to normalise the lives of people with insulin dependent diabetes. DIABECELL® is implanted into patients and works by self-regulating and efficiently secreting insulin in the patient’s body.
These implanted cells have led to near-normal blood glucose levels in patients, reduced the need for insulin injections and lessened episodes of high blood glucose that lead to long term complications. The treatment is also intended to eliminate life threatening episodes of low blood glucose levels.
The lives of more than 40 million people with Type 1 diabetes may well change as preliminary clinical trial information has shown that two patients with long standing insulin dependent diabetes now do not require daily insulin injections after treatment with DIABECELL®. All patients followed up to date have shown improvement of diabetes control with better glycated haemoglobin (%HbA1c) levels.
LCT Medical Director, Professor Bob Elliott said recently:
“Having two patients going off their insulin injections gives me tremendous confidence that we have a treatment which can return people with diabetes to a normal life”.

The treatment involves introducing encapsulated porcine cells into the abdominal cavity of the patient in a simple procedure which has the potential to be done under local anaesthesia. LCT’s encapsulation technology means that this procedure does not require the use of immunosuppressant drugs.
Living Cell Technologies Limited is incorporated in Australia and listed on the ASX and US OTCQX. It has R&D, pig breeding and manufacturing facilities in New Zealand.

Health Minister approves
NZ diabetes clinical trial
24 June 2009:
LCT expects to commence a clinical trial of DIABECELL® for insulin dependent diabetes at the Middlemore Hospital, Auckland, within two months following approval by the New Zealand Minister of Health, the Honourable Tony Ryall.
The New Zealand trial allows LCT to extend its Phase I/IIa clinical data from its clinical trial in Russia. Two diabetes patients in Russia do not require insulin injections following implants of DIABECELL®. LCT expects to see further benefit with higher doses in the New Zealand trial.
